Oreo wasn't only cute and clever; he had a meaningful job working with autistic and handicapped children.  See video of Oreo working in his community here.

No dog should be killed the way Oreo was, but the loss we have suffered is all the greater because of the talent this little guy had in reaching children and bringing them joy.

An editorial recounting of Oreo’s Murder

-D. Locke

Last Thursday, March 11, 2010, Oreo, a cocker spaniel who was a certified therapy dog and had a special connection with autistic and handicapped children, was brutally killed by his owner's neighbor in Staten Island, NY. Oreo was run over 3 times as the driver of the car went back and forth getting into his parking space, despite neighbors screaming and pleading for him to stop. One of the witnesses was a mere child, and the entire neighborhood has been shaken by this incident. I've been trying for days to think of what could cause a man to drive over a cocker spaniel three times. Rage came to mind, or the other extreme- heartlessness.

Some feel that this man is hostile to most of his neighbors.  The neighborhood, a quiet place on a dead end street, is generally proud of its cohesion. Yet I'm told this man is very possessive of  'his space'  on the street. Previous threats were allegedly made to Oreo's owner and trainer over snow removal his past winter. There were alleged altercations with another neighbors previously over others attempting to park in his space.  Arguments had also broken out with next door neighbors over putting their garbage cans too close to where he parked .

On Thursday, Oreo and his 3 cocker siblings had escaped a gated area which is shared by two other homes in the community. The cockers had gone to the curb where trash had been put out right next to the neighbor's parking space, as their owner tried to round them up.  They were busy investigating the trash when the hostile neighbor came down the street, made a U-turn at the end of the street, and  drove up to park in his space. Other neighbors were also near, screaming at him to stop as they watched Oreo go under the car not once, but three consecutive times.  When the man finished parking and saw what he had done, he offered not a word of apology or concern; he showed no discernable emotion at all.  Later he told the police it was an accident.  That's kind of like accidentally stabbing someone three times, in my mind.

You might think that Oreo died on the spot, but he was not so lucky.  The car's first two passes resulted in massive internal trauma; the third pass injured his head. Oreo was first taken to a NY animal hospital, then transferred to a NJ critical care facility in an effort to save his life. He finally succumbed on Sunday, his injuries proving too great to bear. His owner is beside herself with grief at having first witnessed his mutilation, then experiencing the agony of his long death. She wishes to find justice for Oreo, to honor his memory as well as to protect all pet animals from such callous acts. In his lifetime, Oreo gave so much to his community. With his life taken, his community mourns the loss of their friend.

There is a rapidly growing number of pet owners getting involved in a movement not only to support his owner through this horrific ordeal, but to ensure that no such thing can ever happen again to any of us. We are organizing using social media and the internet while Oreo's owner tries to piece together her life and examines legal options.  It is her hope and ours, as compassionate humans, that we can somehow find justice for this little dog, who gave almost 11 years of his life in loving service to our disadvantaged, our handicapped, and our youth.
